Apply for Social Work Technician Substantial Equivalency
VERIFY THE APPROPRIATE APPLICATION PROCESS
This application process applies to those who have not graduated from a recognized social work technician program and who have completed post-secondary education in a related field.
Stop and complete the Social Work Technician Application instead if you:
- Have successfully completed the recognized social work technician programs:
- NBCC’s Social Service Community Worker program
- CCNB’s Technique en service social et communautaire program
- A program approved by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)
- An Alberta Social Work Diploma program approved by the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW)
OR
- Are currently registered as a social work technician-equivalent in another jurisdiction in Canada (Ex: OCSWSSW).
Due to the unique nature of the Substantial Equivalency application process, the NBASW cannot guarantee a timeframe in which the application will be considered. The NBASW will make our most sincere effort to review Substantial Equivalency applications at our earliest opportunity.
Applicants will receive a confirmation email once all required application documents have been received. Applicants will be contacted again only after a decision has been made on the file.

The Social Work Technician equivalency process applies to those who have not graduated from a recognized social work technician program and who have completed post-secondary education in a related field.
The Substantial Equivalency pathway is a process of assessing applicants’ education to verify that it aligns with the education received by Social Work Technicians.

To apply for social work technician substantial equivalency in New Brunswick:

OFFICIAL PROGRAM TRANSCRIPT
Must be submitted directly from the educational institution to the NBASW following reception of the diploma (applicants must contact the educational institution to request this document be submitted). If your education is from outside the U.S. or Canada, the NBASW may accept the transcripts from educational assessment services. Please contact the Association for more information.
DEMONSTRATION OF KNOWLEDGE DOCUMENT
Please submit a completed Demonstration of Knowledge document to demonstrate the subject areas of your education.
COPIES OF COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Please submit copies of course descriptions / syllabi / outlines for each course included in your Demonstration of Knowledge document.
OTHER RELEVANT DOCUMENTS
If you wish to have any other learning activity considered, please complete the “Other Considerations” section of the Demonstration of Knowledge document and submit copies of all applicable information and documentation.
NOTE ON TRANSLATION
Documents that are not in English or French must be translated into English or French before they are submitted to the NBASW. Translations must be completed by a qualified translator. Please reach out to the NBASW for more information.
NOTICE OF THE DECISION
Once all applicable application documents have been received, the NBASW will confirm reception of the completed application. Due to the unique nature of the Substantial Equivalency application process, the NBASW cannot guarantee a timeframe in which the application will be considered. The NBASW will make our most sincere effort to review Substantial Equivalency applications at our earliest opportunity. A notice of the decision will be sent to the applicant by email, which will outline if the applicant is eligible for social work technician registration, eligible for educational upgrading processes, or not eligible.
