Social Work Week News Release

New Brunswick Social Workers Celebrate the Power to Empower

For Immediate Release

March 13-17, 2017 marks social work week in New Brunswick. Each year, the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers and its 1,900 members celebrate the positive impacts of the social work profession in our communities. This year’s theme is The Power to Empower. NBASW President, Claude Savoie shared “We are proud to be Social Workers!  This week we celebrate not only the profession of social work but also the dedication and commitment of social workers to the people of New Brunswick who count on social workers for a wide variety of services”.

Each year thousands of New Brunswickers’ lives are positively impacted by the involvement of a social worker. From those working in research and policy, to hospital, school and community settings social workers share a commitment to supporting the wellbeing of the individuals, families and communities they serve. As a value-based profession that focuses on the strength and abilities of all people, social workers understand that New Brunswick’s strongest asset is its citizens.

The Power to Empoweracknowledges that social workers have the honour of working side by side with those they serve to recognize their strengths, understand their rights and reach their goals. In a broader sense, empowerment involves ensuring that the voices of individuals are heard, that rights and responsibilities are understood and balanced, skills for independence are developed and individuals are valued and respected.

Social workers are proud to uphold a strong commitment to the pursuit of social justice, protect human rights and stand against discrimination in all its forms. Through education, advocacy and community organizing, social workers help break down barriers and promote acceptance, inclusion and the celebration of diversity in all its forms.
