Letter to the Editor: Pride 2017
August 14, 2017
Since August 2010 the city of Fredericton has celebrated Pride Week, which is meant to uplift and honour the LGBTQ+ community, and celebrate the diversity that exists in Fredericton and the surrounding areas. The New Brunswick Association of Social Workers is delighted to be a supporter of Pride Week and what it represents. The social work profession has a proud history of celebrating diversity and championing equality, by supporting minority groups to be recognized and achieve their full potential.
As a community, we have come to recognize the many strengths that diversity brings to our city and the importance of welcoming individuals with varied backgrounds and perspectives to shape the future of our community and culture. Sunday’s hugely successful Pride parade in Fredericton was a beautiful demonstration of the love and acceptance that exists in New Brunswick.
Although there have been great strides in making diversity a key focus in our community, struggles and barriers still remain for many minority populations. So, it is in this month of courage and pride, that we remember the struggles and the victories of minority groups in our communities and stand with them as allies to create a truly inclusive New Brunswick.
