2007 Code of Ethics
The Canadian Association of Social Workers launched its most recent revision to the Code of Ethics in 2005. As it has been the practice in the past, the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers adopted the Code and it became effective in January 2006. However, following an opinion from our legal counsel that the new Code would likely be problematic given its lack of mandatory language, the NBASW returned to the use of the 1994 Code of Ethics and a decision was made by the Board to mandate our Registrar and our legal counsel to undertake the task of reviewing and amending the two 2005 documents from CASW to ensure that these would be defensible from a regulatory perspective.
The Code consists of a statement of Values and Principleswhich is for all practical purposes, the CASW 2005 Code of Ethics. This is followed by the actual NBASW Code of Ethics which is, in large part, taken from the CASW 2005Guidelines for Ethical Practicewith mandatory language inserted. However, it was decided to retain in whole or in part some of the clauses from the 1994 Code.
