Benefits of Membership

The New Brunswick Association of Social Workers (NBASW) in its role as professional association and regulatory body for the profession of social work in New Brunswick provides its members with a variety of benefits and services both personal and professional. In addition to the use of the regulated professional titles of “Social Worker” and “Registered Social Worker” and the privilege of practicing social work in New Brunswick, membership in the NBASW also provides members with:

A collective voice

One of the greatest benefits of membership in an organization such as the NBASW is the strength of the collective voice the Association provides for the profession of social work within the province. The NBASW works to address interests and concerns of social workers and advocates publicly for social change in our communities through meetings with government officials and other stakeholders, development of policy briefs and standards of practice and the  submission of letters to newspapers and government officials on important social issues. The Association also works to promote the profession of social work in the public realm through the creation of promotional materials (such as our provincial Social Work Scope of Practice document) and collaboration with employers. Because the NBASW is also a member organization of the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW), NBASW members have the added benefit of being part of the national voice of social work in Canada.

Leadership and networking opportunities

Membership in the NBASW can be much more than just annual registration. The NBASW has a variety of ways to get involved. Members can participate in local chapter meetings and activities, volunteer on one of the many committees, attend the Annual General Meeting or serve on the provincial Board of Directors. Becoming involved in the Association allows members to participate in discussions on issues relevant to the field, affect decisions that shape the profession and network with other social workers in the province.

Access to professional support and guidance

As a value based profession, social workers are often faced with ethical dilemmas in which they must make difficult decisions. As members of the NBASW, social workers have the benefit of access to support and guidance in these difficult professional situations. The Association Registrar, as well as the NBASW Practice Issues, Ethics and Professional Standard committee are available to provide guidance and respond to questions from members relating to ethics and practice.

Access to publications and information relevant to social work

Membership with the NBASW also allows members to access valuable resources, both provincial and national. Publications such as the NBASW Dossier allow members to stay up to date on relevant local and provincial social work news, research, discussions and initiatives.  Members can also take advantage of national social work resources such as the CASW journal Canadian Social Work, position papers and national policy briefs available only to members on the CASW website.
